Project Spotlight: Dry Rot Siding Repair
In the Pacific Northwest, moisture can take a toll on a home's exterior—and what starts as a small area of damaged siding can become a much bigger problem if it isn't addressed.
For this recent project, Hansen Contracting & Repairs repaired visible dry rot along the bottom of the home's siding, addressing the damaged area before the deterioration had a chance to spread further.
When Siding Damage Is More Than Cosmetic
Dry rot isn't just an appearance issue. When wood is repeatedly exposed to moisture and isn't able to properly dry, deterioration can develop and eventually affect materials beneath or around the damaged area.
On this home, the deterioration was clearly visible along the lower edge of the siding. Catching damage like this early gives homeowners an opportunity to address the affected materials before the repair becomes more extensive.
Repairing the Damage
For a dry rot repair, it's important to look beyond what can be seen from the exterior. Damaged material needs to be removed so the condition of the area underneath can be evaluated and the necessary repairs made before everything is properly closed back up.
Our goal isn't simply to cover up visible damage—it's to identify the extent of the problem and make a lasting repair.
Watch for Signs of Exterior Moisture Damage
Oregon's wet climate makes it especially important to keep an eye on siding and exterior woodwork. Homeowners should pay attention to areas that appear soft, cracked, deteriorated, discolored, or damaged, particularly around the bottom of siding, windows, doors, trim, and other areas exposed to moisture.
If something doesn't look right, having it evaluated sooner can help prevent a relatively contained repair from becoming a larger project.
